Phenomenal weekend with overall victory, class win and championship lead at the Nürburgring

31. July 2023

Strong performance by Leipert Motorsport at the Nürburgring (Germany). At the third event of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe (LST-E), the MOTUL-supported team from Wegberg once again took to the grid with five Lamborghini Super Trofeo EVO 2 cars in the Eifel. With five podium finishes, two class victories, the overall win in the second race and as the leader of the PRO & AM class, Leipert Motorsport travelled back home on Sunday.

In the first free practice sessions on Friday, the team was already able to set signs with the best times. The two races on Saturday and Sunday were very different in terms of weather. Race one had almost perfect conditions with sunshine. In the second race on Sunday, it rained heavily shortly before the start. Afterwards, the track partially dried, so that everyone started with slicks. However, the first safety car phase was not long in coming. Almost the entire first half of the race was completed behind the safety car.

New Zealander Brendon Leitch (Pro classification, # 86) showed a top performance in the Eifel. Starting positions 5 and 7 were a good starting position, but required a lot of work during the races. In race one, Leitch quickly worked his way to the front and crossed the finish line in 2nd place overall and in the Pro classification. Things went perfectly in Sunday’s race. Leitch was in third place after the obligatory stop, and subsequently made it to first place with exciting and clean manoeuvres, thus taking his first overall win of the season and defending his lead in the Pro classification.

The two youngsters Yury Wagner and Patrik Matthiesen (Pro classification, #99) delivered their best performance of the season until now. The Lamborghini Juniors crossed the finish line in P8 and P9 in the Pro classification, placing them in the fiercely contested Top-10 in both races.

Italian Gabriel Rindone (AM classification, #21) had an almost perfect weekend. After qualifying, he was on pole position in the AM classification for both races. In the first race, he drove at the front for almost the entire time and looked like the sure winner just 15 minutes before the chequered flag fell. But due to a technical problem, Rindone lost the victory he deserved and finished the race in P4. The second race, on the other hand, went according to plan. After a hard and confident fight, Rindone regained the lead 20 minutes before the end of the race and thus also defended the lead in the AM standings.

Kerong Li (China) and the US American Jean-Francois Brunot (AM classification, #88) put in a solid performance as usual. In the first race, the duo finished 8th in class, in Sunday’s race they crossed the finish line in 4th place, narrowly missing out on their second podium of the season.

Jürgen Krebs from Switzerland (LC-Cup, #65) placed 3rd and 2nd on the grid in both qualifying sessions. In the races, Krebs was then convincing again and finished 2nd twice. As a result, he improved from position 6 to fourth in the LC-Cup standings and will still be able to intervene in the title fight, although he had to skip the second event in Spa-Francorchamps.

Managing Directors Marcel Leipert & Marc Poos:

“It was a phenomenal race weekend and home race for us. We are leading the championship in the PRO and AM classifications as well as in the team classification. In addition, Jürgen Krebs now also has a chance in the LC Cup after his great performance. We are on the right way to achieve the goals we set for the season. Our next event in Valencia is new territory for many drivers, so it is of the highest priority for us to start our preparations as early as possible in a concentrated and focused manner. Before Valencia, however, we will stop off with the Lamborghini GT3s at the Michelin Le Mans Cup in Aragon.”

The next race of Leipert Motorsport will take place in Aragon (Spain, 24-25 August). There, Gabriel Rindone (I)/Patrick Kujala (FIN) and Gerhard Watzinger (USA)/Brendon Leitch (NZ) will compete in the Michelin Le Mans Cup with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO 2. After winning the last round in France, Rindone and Kujala are also in full title contention here. The fourth event of the Super Trofeo then follows in Valencia (Spain, 15-17 September).
