The final of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo took place in 2024 at the Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto (Spain). Leipert Motorsport entered two Lamborghini Super Trofeo EVO 2 cars on the grid. First, the last two rounds of the continental championships were held before the last titles of the season were awarded in the grand world final. A total of almost 90 Lamborghini (46 Europe, 25 North America and 17 Asia) travelled to Spain. The long race weekend ended extremely successfully for the MOTUL-supported team from Wegberg. Anthony McIntosh (USA) and Brendon Leitch (New Zealand) became the winners of the World Finals in the ProAm classification.
Further podium finish in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe
Among the 46 competitors in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe were the two Leipert cars with the German driver duo Sebastian Balthasar/Jacob Riegel (Pro classification, #70) and Brendon Leitch/Anthony McIntosh (NZ/USA, ProAm classification, #99).
The qualifying sessions with constant rainfall did not produce optimal results. P3 on the grid for Leitch and P11 for McIntosh in the ProAm classification, as well as P14 for Balthasar and P16 for Riegel in the Pro classification were the positions for the last two European races.
In the first race, starting driver Leitch handed the #99 Lamborghini over to his partner McIntosh in 2nd place. Balthasar came into the pits in 9th place with the #70, where Riegel took over. The rain did not let up, but became heavier and heavier, so that race control first sent the safety car onto the track and later had to stop the race shortly before the end with the red flag. Leitch/McIntosh clinched their third podium result in a row with third place. Balthasar/Riegel just missed out on the points in 11th place.
The good weather returned to Jerez for the second race. McIntosh and Riegel were able to significantly improve their grid positions in the first stint. After the driver changes, the #99 was 7th in class and the #70 12th, but Leitch and Balthasar were unable to make up any further ground as the safety car was deployed twice more and the race was eventually abandoned after an accident. McIntosh/Leitch finished in 5th place and Riegel/Balthasar again in 11th place.
World Final Champions title for Leipert Motorsport at the grand finale of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo
At the World Final, the grid was 86 vehicles strong with participants from Europe, Asia and North America. The World Final races were therefore split into two groups (AM classification/LC Cup and Pro classification/Pro-Am classification).
McIntosh (#99) started the first race from 7th on the grid, Riegel (#70) began in 20th position, with both drivers improving in the early stages. McIntosh drove into the pits for the driver change in 3rd place, while Riegel was 16th at this point. Leitch soon took the lead in the ProAm standings and crossed the finish line first in the Pro-Am classification. The duo was delighted to be leading the standings with maximum points. Balthasar crossed the finish line in 16th place.
In the second race, Leitch was always in the leading group after starting from third on the grid. After the pit stop, McIntosh then took the lead, which he defended to the finish with the help of his team-mate Riegel. Balthasar/Riegel put in the best performance of the weekend. Starting from 10th place, they were directly behind their team-mate after the stop and escorted him to the finish. The result was a good 9th place.
Managing Directors Marcel Leipert & Marc Poos:
‘We had a great end to the season. The World Championship for McIntosh/Leitch was a terrific success. The team did an outstanding and flawless job in Spain and throughout the year. Many thanks at this point to the entire team! Overall, we can look back on a pretty good season in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. Balthasar/Riegel have shown a solid performance. Especially in the first half of the season, where we were able to celebrate several podium finishes. Unfortunately, we lacked the necessary bit of luck in the second half of the season to finish the season on the podium. After McIntosh and Glenn McGee had already been very successful in the AM classification, the Leitch/McIntosh pairing surpassed this in the ProAm classification. We would also like to congratulate Anthony and Glenn, who also won the Am classification in North America together and secured the runner-up World Final Champion title in Jerez.
We will now celebrate the crowning finale of the season and then take a short break to recuperate. The new season starts early, as we will be competing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo for the 18th time at the 24-hour race in Dubai (UAE) on the second weekend in January 2025.’
The classic winter break is suspended for Leipert Motorsport this year, as the pre-season tests in Barcelona will continue in just two weeks. Just a few days after the New Year, the team from Wegberg will then compete in the 24 Hours of Dubai (United Arab Emirates, 10-12 January 2025). Two Lamborghini Super Trofeo Evo2 cars are planned for the race.
