Strong performance for Leipert Motorsport at the 12h race of the 24h Series in Hockenheim. After a perfect qualifying with pole position in the class and 4th overall, the team from Wegberg already had the GTX class victory in sight when a water cooler damaged by a stone struck shortly before the end of the race prevented the seemingly certain triumph.
Leipert Motorsport competed in the 12h race of the 24h Series in Hockenheim with the Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo and the driver trio Kerong Li (China), Jean-Francois Brunot (USA) and Tim Müller (SUI). In qualifying, the driver team showed a strong performance. In the end, the team’s lap times – the average of the times of all three drivers counted for the starting grid – earned them pole position in the GTX class and fourth place overall in the 25-vehicle starting field.
The 12-hour race, which was held in two sections of six hours each, initially went according to plan for the MOTUL-backed team. The #710 Lamborghini was in the top 10 from the start and battled for victory with another strong Lamborghini team in the class.
Despite a high level of brake wear – by Hockenheim standards – the trio Li/Brunot/Müller were on course for victory in the GTX class until a radiator leak caused by a stone struck caused problems. Shortly before the final, the Leipert Lamborghini had to pit again for a 10-minute repair. This meant that they missed out on class victory. Nevertheless, the team took over the overall lead in the GTX class of the 24h Series with second place.
Managing Directors Marcel Leipert & Marc Poos:
“The drivers put in a strong performance and the car worked solidly. It was bitter to lose an almost certain class win so close to the end. It was just bad luck that a stone damaged the radiator. At least we still managed to finish, unfortunately not in the position we had hoped for. However, we are happy to start the race in Portimao as championship leader in the GTX class and to defend our position there.”
The team from Wegberg is already in preparations for the upcoming event with the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe and the GT World Challenge Endurance, which will take place from 02-05 July at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France.
